SCENE 1
What causes drug addiction?
SCENE 2
To find out researchers in the 70’s investigated rats in empty cages with normal and drugged water.
SCENE 3
Because all their rats choose the drugged water, became addicted and died of malnutrition..
SCENE 4
They concluded that drugs are uncontrollable and that a global "War on Drugs" was necessary
SCENE 5
But another scientist thought it was obvious that lonely rats in boring cages would choose drugs over water.
SCENE 6
So he put them in a lush cage called “Rat Park” with friends and everything a rat could want.
SCENE 7
His rats chose NOT TO USE the drugs.
SCENE 8
He even used addicted rats from the lonely cages
SCENE 9
who gradually reduced to become drug free at Rat Park.
SCENE 10
That's like many humans who get strong drugs in Hospitals
SCENE 11
and just stop when they go home to a loving family.
SCENE 12
While alone and unhappy street users turn into desperate addicts.
SCENE 13
These experiments show that chemical addiction is not the only thing that matters in drug abuse.
SCENE 14
And that a person’s access to a “lush cage” is even more important
SCENE 15
than making drugs unavailable and criminalising its users.
