Thai Silk is not as difficult to care for as is commonly thought if you know and understand the process.
Some tips before washing silk: Baby’s soap or a very mild detergent is best for washing Thai silk. Regular detergent is not recommended because it has a high PH value, which makes the silk less shiny after washing.
Water should be about 30 degree or less. Hot or warm water is not recommended because it may shrink the fabric and always separate white and colored silk when you wash them.
Here is what you need to prepare: Baby’s soap or a very mild detergent, water at 30 degree or less and a washing bag. White vinegar and Softener are optional.
This is how you start: First turn the silk inside out, and put it into the washing bag. Fill the baby’s soap or a very mild PH detergent into the washing machine and add softener if you like. Set the machine’s temperature to 30 degree or less, Choose the slowest option for spinning which could be around 400. Choose the shortest washing time which could be around 10 to 15 minutes and start the machine.
Once it is finished, take the silk out and hang it to dry in a shady place where there is air movement. This will help the color stay fresh and bright for a long time. Leaving your silk in the sun will fade its color and reduce it’s shininess.
To help maintain your silk’s beautiful colors and shininess you can add this step after washing it in the washing machine. Soak the silk in 1-2 liters of water mixed with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar for 1-2 minutes, then wash it off with clean water before hanging it to dry. Thank you for watching ☺
